As of now, Italy lacks a visa for digital nomads, but that is about to change. The Italian government has approved the digital nomad visa for remote workers on March 28, 2022, which is now a part of Italian law.

Although as of now, Italy lacks a visa for digital nomads, but that is about to change. The Italian government has approved the digital nomad visa for remote workers on March 28, 2022, which is now a part of Italian law.


Since the Italy digital nomad visa has not been launched yet, you can use the visas below to work in Italy.


The Italy Self-Employment Visa is for those who want to work as a freelancer or start a business in Italy. There are three types of self-employment visas: Italy Startup Visa, Italy Freelancer Visa, and Italy Entrepreneur Visa.


  • The Italy Startup Visa is for those who want to open an innovative company in Italy or join an existing company in an executive role.


  • The Italy Freelancer Visa is for those who want to be self-employed, do freelance work and not work for a company.


  • The Italy Entrepreneur Visa is for those who want to implement an investment plan (of no less than €500,000) that benefits the Italian economy.


Who is eligible to apply for the Italy Self-Employment Visa?


  • This visa requirement applies to non-EU countries exempt from the Schengen visa


  • If you're from a non-EU country exempt from the Schengen visa and currently in Italy without a visa, you'll still need to apply for the Italy Self-Employment Visa from your home country.


  • Foreign nationals with a Schengen visa who are already in Italy must obtain their Italian long-stay visa before applying for a residence permit.
